AMC Greenlights James Cameron Doc Series About the Evolution of Sci-Fi

‘James Cameron’s Story of Science Fiction’ will debut on the cable network in 2018.

AMC has ordered a new documentary series from James Cameron that will explore the evolution of sci-fi.

Tentatively titled James Cameron’s Story of Science Fiction, the six-episode series will delve into sci-fi’s origins as a small genre with a cult and developing to the blockbuster pop-culture phenomenon it is today. The show is slated to debut in 2018.

In each hourlong episode, the Avatar director will introduce one of the “big questions” that humankind has contemplated throughout the ages and reach back into sci-fi’s past to better understand how our favorite films, TV shows, books and video games were born and where the genre — and our species — might be going in the future. Cameron and his contemporaries, who have helped to fuel sci-fi’s spectacular growth over the last several decades, also will debate the merit, meaning and impact of the films and novels that influenced them.

“When I was a kid, I basically read any book with a spaceship on the cover and I saw 2001: A Space Odyssey many, many times,” said Cameron. “The movie inspired me to become a filmmaker. I liked the special effects, but I really loved the ideas and the questions behind them: How will the world end? Will technology destroy us? What does it mean to be human?

“These are subjects sci-fi has never been afraid to tackle,” added the director. “With this series, we are going back to the origins of sci-fi, following the DNA of these ideas back to the source. Without Jules Verne and H.G. Wells, there wouldn’t have been Ray Bradbury or Robert A. Heinlein, and without them, there wouldn’t be [George] Lucas, [Steven] Spielberg, Ridley Scott or me. As a filmmaker who specializes in science fiction, I’m interested in exploring the struggles and the triumphs that brought these incredible stories to life and seeing how art imitates life, as well as how science fiction imitates and sometimes informs science.”

James Cameron’s Story of Science Fiction is being produced by Left/Right. Cameron, Maria Wilhelm, Ken Druckerman and Banks Tarver will executive produce. Seattle’s Museum of Pop Culture (MoPOP), which houses the Science Fiction and Fantasy Hall of Fame, is consulting on the series.

“James Cameron is one of the great filmmakers of our time, and his films have literally defined the genre of science fiction for this generation, and generations to come,” said Joel Stillerman, president of original programming and development for AMC and SundanceTV. “As we continue to pursue event documentary series at AMC that our viewers are passionate about, it’s hard to imagine a better fit to explore the rich history of this genre than Mr. Cameron. He’s a consummate entertainer, a scholar, and an explorer. We are incredibly fortunate to be working with him and the amazing team at Left/Right on this endeavor.”

Brad Pitt Attends Charity Event in Malibu

Less than one week after making his surprise appearance at the Golden Globes last Sunday, an upbeat Brad Pitt stepped out to a charity event.

On Saturday, the 53-year-old actor attended the Alex & Ani-hosted ROCK4EB! with Sting and Chris Cornell at EBMRF Benefit in Malibu, California. The event was emceed by Zach Galifianakis and put on to promote awareness about epidermolysis bullosa (EB), a rare and life-threatening skin disease.

Pitt wore a long black coat and seemed in good spirits as he took photos with fans during his time at the charity function, which included performances by Sting and Chris Cornell. He was spotted shaking hands and making people laugh at the event, whose other famous guests included Charlie Hunnam, Rami Malek, Garrett Hedlund, Kaley Cuoco, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Scott Foley and David Spade.

Last Sunday, Pitt took the Golden Globes stage to loud applause from the crowd. He presented the film Moonlight, which his company produced, and the movie won the Globe for best drama.

One day later, he and his ex Angelina Jolie released a joint statement stating that they have reached an agreement to handle their divorce privately and keep details confidential.

Father of Aaron Rodgers opens up on family rift: ‘Fame can change things’

If the Packers are able to pull off an upset of the Falcons on Sunday in the NFC title game, there’s a good chance you’ll be reading a lot about Aaron Rodgers in the two weeks leading up to Super Bowl LI.

There’s also a good chance that you’ll be reading a lot about Rodgers’ family, and that’s because the Packers quarterback is currently estranged from his mom, dad and two brothers.

Although Rodgers has refused to answer questions about the rift, his dad finally answered questions about the feud during an interview with the New York Times that was held in the days leading up to Green Bay’s 34-31 win over the Cowboys on Sunday.

Ed Rodgers confirmed to the Times that the family hasn’t spoken with Aaron since the holiday season of 2014, which means it’s now been over two years.

According to Ed, he’s not sure if things have gotten better with Aaron over the past 24 months.

“It’s hard to tell sometimes,” Ed Rodgers said when asked if the relationship is improving.

Ed Rodgers also added that, “Fame can change things.”

The Rodgers family feud went public in July when Aaron’s brother, Jordan, was a contestant on “The Bachelorette.” While Jordan was courting Jo Jo Fletcher, he revealed that everyone in the family is currently estranged from Aaron.

Aaron Rodgers has been estranged from his immediate family members for more than two years.

“It would have been nice to share JoJo with not only my parents and my brother Luke, but Aaron as well,” Jordan said at the time. “I miss my brother a lot, especially in moments like this because my family means so much.”

In an ideal world, the family feud would’ve stayed under wraps, but Ed is ultimately OK with the fact that it got out.

“Airing public laundry is not what I would have chosen,” Ed said. “[But] it’s good to have it all come out.”

As for Aaron, he hasn’t really had anything to say about the rift. He was first asked about it in July when he reported to training camp, and the subject also came up on Thursday before the Packers played the Cowboys.

“I just don’t think it’s appropriate talking about family stuff publicly,” he said Thursday at the Packers’ practice facility.

“Airing public laundry is not what I would have chosen. [But] it’s good to have it all come out.”— Ed Rodgers

Aaron also added that he had no idea if Jordan, who lives in Dallas, attended Sunday’s game between the Cowboys and Packers.

The Packers quarterback clearly doesn’t like answering questions about his family rift, which means Super Bowl week could turn into a soap opera if the Packers are involved. There will be thousands of media members on hand for Media Day alone, and if you’ve ever watched Media Day go down, you know that no one is afraid to ask about anything, which means Aaron could be getting a lot of questions about his family.

Katherine Heigl and Josh Kelley Welcome Son

He’s here!

Doubt star Katherine Heigl and her husband Josh Kelley welcomed son Joshua Bishop Kelley Jr. on Tuesday, Dec. 20, a rep confirms to PEOPLE exclusively.

Baby Joshua joins big sisters Adalaide, 4½, and Naleigh, 8.

The Grey’s Anatomy alum, 38, and her musician husband, 36 — whose family is based in Utah — revealed their baby news exclusively to PEOPLE in June.

“The Kelley clan is thrilled to announce that we are expecting a third addition to our family,” the couple told PEOPLE in a statement. “Naleigh and Adalaide could not be more excited to welcome their new sibling into the fold, and Josh and I are overflowing with joy and gratitude.”

“This is an incredibly exciting time for us filled with hope, anticipation and hormones. Well, only I’m filled with hormones, but everyone in the family gets to enjoy them,” Heigl joked. “We couldn’t be more excited to be able to finally share this news with our fans, and are looking forward to continuing to share the journey with you all.”

Heigl has been giving her fans a glimpse into her pregnancy on both her Instagram account and personal home and lifestyle blog, Heavenly Days.

“It’s hard enough for me to get motivated to work out when I’m not pregnant but now that I am it’s 10 times harder. I’m not up for weight training, lengthy cardio workouts or any of those new and fashionable exercise classes. What I am up for is yoga!” the actress wrote in a September post about her favorite pregnancy exercise.

The couple were the guests of honor at a December baby shower thrown by Heigl’s mom Nancy.

“It was a magical night full of love, laughter, great food, holiday cheer and anticipation for the new life we are about to welcome into our world,” Heigl blogged following the event.

Shortly following her pregnancy announcement, the actress wrote about her experiences in becoming a first-time biological mother.

“We were considering adoption again, fostering, or pregnancy if possible,” she explained. “Seeing as I have never been pregnant and as my OB/GYN reminded me last year, I’m of advanced maternal age, I wasn’t sure pregnancy was even in the cards for us. Turns out it was very much in the cards!”

Bruce Springsteen Cover Band Drops Out of Donald Trump Party

The B-Street Band, a popular Bruce Springsteen cover group that’s performed nearly 200 gigs a year since 1980, convened in the dressing room Sunday night before a typical late-afternoon gig at Bensalem, PA’s Parx Casino.

Will Forte, the group’s 63-year-old keyboardist, manager, agent and publicist, among other roles, was telling the band about the “thousands of emails from both sides” he had received after news broke that the group would be playing the Garden State Presidential Inaugural Gala on January 19th as part of Donald Trump’s inauguration. “We’re standing out in the storm right here,” he told the band. “We gotta get out of the storm.”

In the past few days, they had started to feel isolated because, as Forte says, “the story was so distorted.” “There were misleading headlines like, ‘Trump Hires B-Street Band,'” he says. “We felt like we were out on our own on an island.”

If the B-Street Band pledge allegiance to anyone, it’s Springsteen, who has repeatedly voiced his anger and disgust at the president-elect. (Forte half-jokingly said of the B-Street Band last week, “I don’t even know if they have any politics.”) Out of respect for their musical inspiration, they’ve decided to pull out of this week’s event.

“We owe everything to [Bruce] and our gratitude and respect to the band is imperative above all else.”

“We had to make it known that we didn’t want to seem disrespectful, in any way, shape or form, to Bruce and his music and his band,” Forte says. “I don’t want to upset them. We owe everything to him and our gratitude and respect to the band is imperative above all else. It became clear to us that this wasn’t working and we just had to do what we thought was the right thing to do and that was to pull out.”

The group had played the gala twice before to little controversy for President Obama and signed a contract for this year’s gig in 2013, long before the presidential nominees were decided. But this year was different.

“As time went by, the complexity of the situation became real immense and intense,” Forte tells Rolling Stone. “The band was caught in a hurricane. We didn’t see this coming, of course.”

Springsteen never weighed in on the controversy, but Garry Tallent, the E Street Band’s founding bassist, tweeted, in response to news of the B-Street band’s appearance, “Please tell me this is more fake news. Or at least a joke.” Steven Van Zandt, the group’s outspoken guitarist, tweeted of the B-Street Band, “Nice guys. Met them. I wouldn’t say right or wrong. Up to them. But it’s naive to think one can separate Art and Politics. Art IS Politics.”

Forte agrees. “All this stuff made it clear to us that this event is not worth it,” he says. “It’s just a job to us. We’re just trying to hold up a contract. We’re not trying to prove anything. We’re just a fun band!

“When I started this band 37 years ago, it was only about performing and making people happy,” he adds. “I never thought the distortion of what we do as a band would’ve been so intense. I wish it never would’ve happened. We would’ve never got involved in this if I knew how this would turn out. I would trade in all the support and publicity just to go back to where we were four months ago. I don’t think they’ll ever be a cover band of our size in the history of music that will get the attention of something this big.”

Speaking to Rolling Stone last week, Forte made it clear that both music and contractual obligations took precedence over politics. To paraphrase Rolling Stone‘s Rob Sheffield, Forte, who’s spent four decades performing Springsteen’s music as a full-time job, was becoming a lost character in Nebraska, Springsteen’s stark 1982 album about “a portrait of a wounded America that fuels its machinery by consuming its people’s dreams.”

“I’ve been in enough litigation in my life,” Forte said last week. “I have four kids. I’m 63 years old. I can’t make stands like other people can. I’m not in that position.”

“I’m worn out. The band’s worn out. Everybody loves to have their 15 minutes of fame, but maybe not this way.”

But now that position has changed. “So far, it’s okay,” he says, when asked about any possible financial backlash from the band’s musical about-face. “But that’s all I can say. Whatever the consequences are for breaking a contract, I’m willing to take because this is much more important.”

Forte sighs loudly and sounds, unwittingly, more like someone in Nebraska than any Springsteen song he’s performed. “My wife’s a schoolteacher; makes $52,000 a year,” he says. “Been working at the same school 20 years. Twenty years. So where am I going with this? There’s nowhere for me to go.”

Organizers of the event tell Rolling Stone that they are lining up alternate talent. “We are very disappointed, but we understand the decision based on all the questions and attention this has brought to the B-Street Band,” Nancy Fatemi, executive director of event organizer New Jersey State Society, tells Rolling Stone in a statement. “Our mission has always been to bring people together in a congenial, nonpartisan way. In New Jersey, we are always stronger than the storm.”

The band’s refusal to perform reflects more a pro-Springsteen sentiment than anything about Donald Trump. (“C’mon, we’re a bar band,” Forte said last week. “It’s got nothing to do with politics whatsoever.”) But in 2017, every performance even tangentially connected to Trump is a political act, whether the artist likes it or not. Forte says he’d rather discuss the numerous couples that have met, and later married, at his shows or inspirational fans that have succumbed to cancer and asked to be buried in a B-Street Band T-shirt.

“I’m worn out,” he says. “The band’s worn out. Everybody loves to have their 15 minutes of fame, but maybe not this way.”

Selena Gomez Sings and Dances in New Studio Clips: Watch

OK, so Selena Gomez is the studio. With her collaborators. And they’re singing and dancing and looking positively adorable. But is it just the start of something beautiful, another album perhaps? Or just musicians hanging out in familiar turf with a good reason to celebrate.

Selena spent time in the studio with songwriters Justin Tranter and Julia Michaels on the weekend, where they sang and smiled and shared it all on Intagram.

“When the people who changed your life create magic… I’m so happy for you guys – one of my favorite songs they have ever written,” Gomez wrote in the caption of her post, which she shared Sunday (Jan. 15).

Republic Group president Charlie Walk shared his own post with the hashtag #issues, referencing Julia Michaels’ debut single of that name (written by Michaels and Tranter), which dropped last week and is clearly the kick-starter for this party.

And Tranter had another. He captioned the clip: “We got [email protected] @selenagomez (I love these two so much I could scream).”

Gomez’ last album release, 2015’s Revival, reached No. 1 on the Billboard 200. Its predecessor, Stars Dance, hit the top in 2013. But without further details and cold, hard facts, Selena’s fans will have to sit tight for news on a new release. The wait continues…

Green Day Rips Donald Trump In New ‘Troubled Times’ Video

Green Day takes aim at President-elect Donald Trump in its latest lyric video.

A Trump-like figure wearing a red “Make America Great Again” cap appears to spew antagonistic rhetoric to crowds from a podium in the new clip for “Troubled Times,” which the punk rock band posted online on Martin Luther King Jr. Day (Monday).

KKK rallies, footage of Civil Rights Movement protests and people holding “Stop racism, Islamophobia and war” signs are interspersed in the trippy video, which is now going viral.

“A new day dawning. Comes without warning. So don’t think twice. We live in troubled times,” frontman Billie Joe Armstrong prophetically sings. The clip ends ominously, however, with someone pressing a big red button to cause a gigantic mushroom cloud.

The video is decidedly apocalyptic, but the band said in an accompanying statement that, “Today we celebrate love and compassion more than ever.”

While the group doesn’t mention Trump by name in the video or song from its album “Revolution Radio,” it has not been shy about criticizing the former reality television personality in the past.

At the 2016 MTV Europe Music Awards, the day before the presidential election, they changed the words to their 2004 hit “American Idiot” from “subliminal mind-fuck America” to “subliminal mind-Trump America.”

And two weeks later at the American Music Awards, the rockers added the extra line of “No Trump, no KKK, no fascist USA” while performing “Bang Bang.”

In Honor of Betty White’s 95th Birthday, Relive Her Best Roles in Movies and Television

Happy birthday to Hollywood’s golden girl!

Betty Whitecelebrates her 95th birthday today, reaching yet another milestone in a decades-spanning career that is still just as active as ever. It’s hard to believe it’s been 55 years since the beloved actress made her feature film debut in Advise & Consent, a performance that led to breakout role after breakout role both in television and film.

And yes, her time in the spotlight is so legendary that in 2013, the Guinness Book of World Records recognized Betty as having the longest TV career for any female entertainer.

From The Mary Tyler Moore Show to The Golden Girls and every LOL-worthy game show appearance in between, it’s nearly impossible to pick just one of Betty’s roles as our favorite, and why should we have to? In honor of her special day, we picked seven of our favorite Betty White performances.

Here’s to so many more!

Betty White, The Mary Tyler Moore Show

The Mary Tyler Moore Show: Oh Sue Ann Nivens, how we love thee. White starred in the long-running 70s sitcom, winning back-to-back Emmys for her comedic chops that later led to her landing her own self-titled show on CBS.

The Golden Girls: If Betty wasn’t a household name by 1985, she certainly was after the classic sitcom following four widows-turned-roomies hit TV. Then 63, White starred opposite Bea Arthur, Estelle Getty and Rue McClanahan throughout The Golden Girls‘ seven-year run, and earned four Golden Globe nominations and one Emmy for the role.

Password: The birthday girl is known as the First Lady of Game Shows (FLOGS for short), and in 1983, Betty became the first woman to win a Daytime Emmy in the Outstanding Game Show Host category for Just Men! White went on to appear and host a handful of game shows well into the 2000s, and even met her hubby—TV personality Allen Ludden—on Password

The Proposal: More modern moviegoers were introduced to the national treasure that is Betty when she starred opposite Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynold in the 2008 rom-com. The actress was wildly hilarious as Grandma Annie, proving she still had it going on at 86-years-old.

Saturday Night Live: The powers-that-be granted the wish of more than 500,000 Facebook users who joined a group requesting White host SNL back in 2010, and boy did she deliver. At 88, Betty became the oldest person to host the sketch series, and during her opening monologue teased that she “didn’t know what Facebook was, and now that I do know what it is, I have to say, it sounds like a huge waste of time.” Never change, Betty.

Hot in Cleveland: In 2010, Betty returned to the small screen for TV Land’s first scripted comedy co-starring Valerie Bertinelli. For five years, the actress wowed TV lovers by playing a Polish caretaker with a not-so-secret wild past.

Wishing Betty her best year yet!
